Thank you for your interest in Gallery Stratford education programs.  Here are answers to frequently-asked questions: All programs, unless otherwise stated, require pre-registration and payment.  Payment may be made using online registration, by phone (with Visa, Mastercard), or in person at the Gallery (credit card, cheque, debit or cash).  The Gallery cannot hold a spot in a class without payment.  Participants are responsible for knowing the schedule of their registered class.  Access to the Gallery and the classroom will be provided 10 minutes prior to the start of each session. Class sizes are set to ensure an optimal experience for each participant.  For sold out programs, you may wish to contact the Education Officer to be added to a waiting list, or to the Gallery email list for future classes.

Teens and Adults

  • This Introduction to Drawing is designed for adults new to drawing or those wishing to develop and further refine their drawing skills. Artist Denise Nonomura will focus on the essential elements required for representational drawing and will start with topics such as observation, shape, value, proportion, perspective, focal point, composition, light and shadow, shading and texture. Participants will work through various drawing exercises using still life set ups and photos. Group instruction and individual guidance will be provided as students incorporate the fundamental elements learned into fully rendered drawings.

  • Specifically designed for adults with developmental disabilities, and an interest in fine arts, Art Expressions gives you the chance to explore art mediums through self-expression. This is an opportunity to develop artistic skills and take part in a positive recreational experience within an art gallery setting. Come on your own, or with a support worker.
     
    Join us for one of two four-week classes exploring themes of colour, shape, line, and texture. Mediums such as oil pastel, paint and mixed media will be explored.

    4 weeks:

  • Get into the warm winter spirit, and join us in this special holiday themed one-of-a-kind art making class. Get inspired by the holiday season, and have fun working with a wide variety of different media to create unique holiday creations. Be inspired to tackle different projects over the course of this five week course, and enjoy the freedom to express your artistic nature in Studio 54 (conveniently located at Gallery Stratford, 54 Romeo Street). Materials included in this all levels class. Led by Melissa Quinn.

    Join us for a two day workshop where artist and educator, Julie Ponesse, will guide you through the creation of an architectural painting from start to finish. Bring your own photo of your home, cottage, building you have seen on your travels, or even only in a photo. Focusing on composition and loose brushwork, you will work to capture the ‘spirit’ of the building in your painting.

    2 days:
    Wednesday, November 28 & Friday November 30 | 9:30am - 4pm *There will be a half hour break for lunch each day. You are welcome to eat your lunch in the studio if you bring your own food.

    Building on basic acrylic painting skills, this course is designed for new or intermediate painters who would like to develop landscape painting skills. Artist and Educator, Claire Bartleman, will cover course topics that include basic drawing accuracy, colour mixing, tonal values, and underpainting. Students will be guided through surface techniques including brushwork, texture creation, compositional decision making and colour choices, while creating their own original landscape paintings.

  • Enjoy the relaxed and supportive studio atmosphere, and gather with others to work on your own original acrylic painting compositions. There will be no instruction offered on these mornings, but paint, brushes, easels and a selection of small canvases will be provided for you to use. Bring your friends and fellow artists to inspire each other in this self-guided morning painting drop-in.

    Weekly until the December 18, 2018:
    Mondays  | 9:30 - 11:30am *drop-in will not take place on holidays or long weekends.

    $5 Drop-in fee per session (pay upon arrival)

  • Break out of the automatic setting comfort zone on your SLR camera. Understanding the camera's manual settings is fun, easy and brings photographs to new levels of brilliance. Local photographer,Terry Manzo, will lead with this creative and inspiring course. Through a relaxed environment, students will gain inspiration and guidance while practicing new skills in this hands-on class. Please bring your SLR camera!

  • Using acrylic paint, you will be led by artist and art educator, Julie Ponesse, through a series of exercises focused on colour theory and mixing. By exploring saturation, hues, contrasts, complements, and warm/cool colours, you will learn the basic skills of working with colour. You will leave this course with new skills, and a number of colour charts, that will be beneficial to your future painting.

  • Open Studio Life Drawing

    Drawing from a model each week, we will have a series of short poses in the first hour, two medium length poses in the second and a single long pose in hour three. As always, you are welcome to attend for whatever combination of times suits your schedule. Open Studio was started by the Gallery's first Director Robert Ihrig, the current program is hosted by Stratford artist Ken Nutt. Please bring your own drawing supplies.

  • Customized sessions are arranged to provide individuals with specialized instruction in painting (acrylic and/or watercolour) or drawing (pencil, ink, charcoal or conte crayon) outside of our standard classes. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow your creative levels or to build your portfolio (especially for secondary students wishing to apply to post-secondary art schools).

    $50/hr (min. 2hrs). All materials included.
