Kellen Hatanaka

Kellen Hatanaka

December 2, 2017 – February 18, 2018

Opening Reception: Friday, December 1, 7-9pm

Kellen Hatanaka is an artist and illustrator whose work tackles a wide variety of subject matter, from celebrating the mundane, to the mythology and humanity of sport and to more recent explorations of race and identity. As a half Japanese Canadian, Hatanaka's recent work explores how his Asian identity fits into the cultural landscape of North America.

"As I create these works and explore what it means to be Asian Canadian, I am constantly aware of my liminal identity and hope that by continuing to work through these subjects in my paintings and sculptures I will come to gain a better understanding of what it means to indentify as mixed race."

The exhibition will showcase recent paintings, as well as drawings, sculptures, and glimpses of material inspiration from Hatanaka's studio.
