This exhibition by Janice Mason Steeves, curated by Aidan Ware, presents a powerful selection of her large-scale oil paintings that mediate the space between light and dark, provoking a meditation on humanity’s need and desire for physical and metaphysical illumination. Gathering Light is a contemplative body of work, reverential, mysterious, searching, and revealing. The works unfold in broad and contrasting visions, like spiritual x-rays that surface and stream. Inspired by Steeves recent travels in Ireland and Scotland to ancient passage graves and stone circles, this exhibition is both a journey taken and a journey waiting; a quest and a reaping; a release and a gathering.
A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design in drawing and painting, Janice Mason Steeves formerly worked in the field of School Psychology before pursuing painting exclusively. Her work is represented in many public and private collections in Canada and internationally, including The Government of Ontario Art Collection, The Schulich School of Business (York University), CIBC World Markets (London), the Senvest Collection (Montreal), and Cenovus Energy (Calgary). She teaches painting and has an active art mentoring program where she works online with students in Europe, the United States, and Canada. She has also been awarded artist residencies in Spain and Ireland.
