RhizoGeographicum

September 10 - November 27, 2016

Opening Reception

Friday, September 9, 2016 from 7 - 10 PM

Laura Kavanaugh and Ian Birse create installations using digital media that transform the host gallery into an immersive space.

Inspired by a species of lichens that survived unprotected in outer space, RhizoGeographicum explores the relationship and textural shapes of symbiotic eco-systems. Wraparound images will be created in the gallery space that create an environment where the viewer must decide which images they wish to focus on within the larger visual field. Birse and Kavanaugh express that ``each viewer makes, at every moment, decisions that create compositions and correlations with sonic events unique to that person``.

Working as a team since 1997, Birse and Kavanaugh have exhibited their installations and performances all over the world at festival venues and art galleries, using gathered audio and video and hardware/software systems of their own design.

This Exhibition at Gallery Stratford runs in conjunction with Ian Birse & Laura Kavanaugh's exhibition Sleeper_Vertical at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus.

Sleeper_Vertical opens in the Atrium at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus on Friday September 9th, 5:30-6:30pm. The exhibition will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 - 5:00PM from September 10 - November 27, 2016.
