Collecting Red

Collecting Red

Works from the Permanent Collection

December 9, 2016 - January 8, 2017

Opening Reception: Friday December 9th, 7-9PM

Collecting Red will showcase a selection of work in various styles and media from Gallery Stratford's permanent collection.  Like many regional art galleries, the Gallery Stratford Collection is broad in scope, with a general focus on works on paper by mostly Canadian or Canadian-based artists.

There are countless ways to organize or curate an exhibition.  This exhibition was formed by focusing on a single colour, in this case the colour red.  Red, is a colour, that is laden with meaning and symbolism.  It signifies complex feelings and emotions that include: passion, love, strength, danger, adventure, joy, anger, stress, action, power and determination.   The artists in this show use red in a variety of ways with a myriad of effects.  Whether it is a simple red line, or a shape, object or entire painted canvas, each artist has used red to help interpret or enhance their subject or image.

Featured artists include:

Kenojuak Ashevak
