What is a Docent?
The word “docent” comes from the Latin verb “docere” which means to instruct, teach or inform. Docents serve as the link between Gallery Stratford’s exhibitions and the public.
What does a Docent do?
Docents lead interactive tours for Gallery Stratford’s student and adult groups. Conducting tours gives docents an excellent opportunity to learn more about the visual arts in general, as well as the works in the gallery’s permanent collection.
Gallery Stratford docents are responsible for conducting theme tours, some of which are interactive and may include hands-on activities aimed at school groups. Docents may be involved in providing studio programs and general tours of the exhibits for adult groups.
What are the benefits?
A docent’s job is rewarding. It is an excellent way to learn more about art and to interact with the public in a cultural environment.
Gallery Stratford recruits and teaches Docent Volunteers to work with our tour groups; sharing information about current exhibitions and exploring aspects of art production.
If you are interested in art and art history, would enjoy meeting new people with similar interests, and want to get involved with Gallery Stratford and your community, consider becoming a docent. For more information, or to apply to become a docent contact us at 519.271.5271.
